In this course you will learn a brief history of transfusion medicine and its increasing prevalence in veterinary medicine. The course will explain component therapy, the goal of component therapy, and why it is important to utilize component therapy in practice. You will learn about the various blood components/products and their indications for use. Canine and feline blood types and their importance will be covered. In addition, cross-matching, when it is indicated, and why it is necessary will be discussed. Preparing and administering transfusions, and nursing care during and after a transfusion will be reviewed. Transfusion reactions will be covered in detail, including different types of reactions, signs and symptoms of these reactions, and what interventions may be needed. Preventative measures to avoid transfusion reactions will also be covered. Other considerations for transfusion medicine and nursing care and complications such as TRALI and TACO will be discussed. Finally, mass transfusions and additional therapies will be briefly covered. Several case studies will be reviewed interactively, encouraging application of what you have learned.
