This half-day is approved for up to 3 CEU by the MVTA

Hemograms: What’s the DIFFerence? - Microscopic evaluation of a blood smear should be a part of every CBC, but both making and viewing slides can be a daunting task.  This one-hour lecture will provide tips on making good quality slides and unpack the mysteries of what we’re looking at under the scope.

Urinalysis: Can’t We Just Send It Out? - Immediate urine analysis is the gold standard, but the current trend is to send it out to the reference lab.  This lecture will look at the pitfalls to this practice and explain proper sample collection handling and basic analysis.

Urinalysis: What IS that? - Come explore the microscopic world of urine!  This one-hour lecture will literally break down urine into its components and identify the many structures that can be found within a urine sample.  From cells to crystals and everything in between, we will differentiate these structures and gain an understanding of their significance to the patient.

Understanding Adrenal Disease - This lecture will provide participants with an understanding of the adrenal axis and adrenal disease that results in Addison's and Cushing's disease in small animal patients. Patient presentation, diagnostics, and treatment will be discussed.

Small Animal Diabetes Mellitus - Diabetes mellitus is a common and treatable small animal endocrinopathy. However, it is a dynamic disease that requires long-term management. Successful management of the diabetic patient is multi-faceted and requires an understanding of the disease itself, frequent patient reassessment, and open client communication and education to set treatment goals. The veterinary technician has a vital role in the management of the diabetic patient.

Veterinary Nursing Process and Care Plans - The nursing process is an organizational tool that has been used in human medicine for many years to guide human nursing students and promote patient care. Use of the nursing process to develop veterinary nursing care plans in veterinary medicine allows veterinary technicians to function in a similar capacity to that of human nurses – using critical thinking and veterinary nursing knowledge to institute a high standard of care and enhance patient care.
