Join the Massachusetts Veterinary Technician Association!

Interested in joining the MVTA? We would love to have you! The MVTA offers a variety of membership options.

The certification pathways available for new members can be a little confusing. Read the what is required below and contact us if you have any questions.

Full membership - New Member (New CVT) 

This membership type is open to those that have taken and passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) within the past 8 years and meet one of the following additional requirements:

  • degree from a program in veterinary technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). School transcript is required to be submitted and must contain your name, the schools name, and list your degree. Please note; you are required to upload a copy of your official transcript to submit your application. Scan your transcript, save it to your computer to upload in your application.

  • degree from a program in veterinary technology which is not accredited by the AVMA or a bachelors degree in animal sciences and (1) one year full time (minimum of 1500 hours) practical experience as a veterinary technician. School transcript is required to be submitted and must contain your name, the schools name, and list your degree.

  • associate degree in animal sciences and (3) three years full time (minimum of 4500 hours) practical experience as a veterinary technician. School transcript is required to be submitted and must contain your name, the schools name, and list your degree. Highlight the courses you intend to use towards your certification application. Work experience must be documented using the Verification of Practical Experience Form.

  • employed (5) five years full time (minimum of 7500 hours) as a veterinary technician plus (18) eighteen semester hours (college credits) in animal sciences.School transcript is required to be submitted and must contain your name, the schools name, and list your degree. Highlight the courses you intend to use towards your certification application. Work experience must be documented using the Verification of Practical Experience Form.

  • employed (8) eight years full time (minimum of 12000 hours) as a veterinary technician. Work experience must be documented using the Verification of Practical Experience Form.

New certification application- $65

 

Full membership - CVT with credential in another state

Veterinary technicians credentialed in a state other than Massachusetts applying for certification by the MVTA

This option is for a practicing, credentialed technician who has taken the VTNE more than 8 years ago but has maintained a credential in some state. In this instance, the VTNE time requirement will be waived.

Those applying for membership through this route must meet the criteria set forth in the New Member category. 

Certification via reciprocity application

 

Full membership - CVT for Veterinary technicians who were previously credentialed in MA but have let their credential lapse

Those applying for membership through this route must meet the criteria set forth in the New Member category, including the passing VTNE score within the past 8 years. 

Applicants must submit 12 CEU for each year lapsed and pay back dues for each year lapsed.

Full membership) renewal - $35

Student membership

Applies to student currently enrolled in a formal training program for veterinary technicians recognized by the Executive Committee. Use the link below to apply.

Associate membership

Don't qualify for certification with the MVTA? No problem, if you are a veterinary professional we would still love to have you join! Associate member ship applies to non-CVT members, technicians credentialed in another state, veterinary assistants, veterinarians, office staff, etc. Use the link below to apply for or renew associate membership.

Associate membership-- $25

All memberships run from January 1st to December 31st
