Common Toxicities in Dogs and Cats

This talk will serve as an overview of the most common toxins that dogs and cats ingest. It will focus on how best to triage these pets in order for them to be treated in the quickest and most efficient way possible. We will discuss toxic versus lethal doses. An overview of mild, moderate, and severe clinical signs will be provided. Appropriate diagnostics and treatment for various toxins will be reviewed.

Speaker bio 

Dr. Kistler Ulmer earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal and Veterinary Sciences from Clemson University in 2012. She earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University in 2017. During her time in veterinary school, she developed her passion for emergency medicine. Her special interests include gastrointestinal and urinary emergencies. Following her rotating small animal internship at VCA South Shore, Dr. Ulmer plans to pursue a career in small animal emergency medicine in the greater Boston area.

Learning objective #1  - Be able to ask the best questions and make proper recommendations to owners over the phone regarding what toxin their pet ingested.

Learning objective #2 - Know the most common clinical signs, complications, and potential treatments of various toxins.

Learning objective #3 - Understand what constitutes a toxic emergency.
